Legislation is being introduced on Capitol Hill to eliminate the disparity in how disaster assistance is distributed. US Representative Rodney Davis says his bill would change the formula when determining amounts for communties devastated by natural disasters.
“It is seriously flawed. Because in states like Illinois that has a large population in one corner of the state, we get penalized in rural areas like Gifford and Washington and a few years ago, Harrisburg” says Davis.
He adds “For example, a million dollars in aid to Chicago may not mean as much as it would for a rural community.”
US Senators Dick Durbin and Mark Kirk have submitted a similar bill in the US Senate.
