Stories about people who want abortions filled a room at the University of Illinois Chicago Friday afternoon, and Vice President Kamala Harris was there to hear them.

“When we are seeing women from neighboring states,” said the vice president, praising Illinois as an abortion oasis, “going to those states that are protecting the constitutional right of women, it makes a statement about the fact that women of those states that are banning access to reproductive health care and in spite of that are being denied access to that health care in their own states.”

Stories included one from the medical director of Chicago abortion provider Family Planning Associates. Allison Cowett said a college student from Alabama came to her – scared – after being told by a crisis pregnancy center in that state her tubes would be tied.
