Basketball teams at one Springfield middle school all have new shoes thanks to a basketball star from the city.
Alex Harden is just starting her second year as a pro playing with the WNBA’s Phoenix Mercury, but she’s already giving back.
“[Alex] has promised to do this every year until each middle school in Springfield has received a pair of shoes,” says Ward 2 Ald. Herman Senor. “I think that’s quite commendable.”
“This is something that she wanted to do to give back to the community,” says Angela Harden, Alex’s mother. “She wanted to thank everyone for all the support, and she looks forward to working with [the schools] over the next several years.”
Harden wasn’t on hand for the drawing which awarded shoes to the Grant Middle School 8th grade basketball teams. The Mercury’s season starts this Saturday, playing against Minnesota.
